Easy Upcycled DIY Sock Snowmen
If you have a few old holey socks (as in the holey kind with holes in, not the holy kind worn by Jesus 😉 ), recycle them by turning them into some easy DIY sock snowmen. In the video tutorial below, I’ll show you just how easy they are to create.
MATERIALS USED:
1 old sock
More old socks to use as stuffing
Yarn
Scissors
A small strip of gingham material (old flannel shirts work great)
Hot glue gun
3 buttons
3 scrapbooking brads
I live in an area that gets very cold, and since I’m someone who goes outside a lot by nature and occupation, I spend much of the winter season sliding my socked feet in and out of my winter boots. The constant grating does tend to take a toll on socks, and by the end of snow season, I’ve usually amassed a collection of a half-dozen or so socks that that have too many holes to wear anymore (You can only darn a pair of socks so many times before there’s nothing left to darn…Darn it!)
I don’t like wasting anything if I can avoid it, (there’s far too much waste in the world today, just look at the number of landfills) so rather than just throw them out, I upcycle my spent socks for a lot of projects, such as sachets, cleaning rags, or most recently, these little DIY sock snowmen.
These are really easy to make and are a good project to do with kids (just let the adults use the glue gun if the kids are too little). The best part is, you can use other old, unusable socks as stuffing, so they’re ultra upcycled!
Luckily these snowmen will never melt on you, so you can pull them out every winter to decorate your home with. However, I did find one unexpected danger these snowmen face: CATS! My cat Frodo has a fetish for “fluffy” socks, and since I used one of those on my snowman’s head as a hat, Frodo decided she wanted to play with the snowman.
Several mornings in a row, I woke up to find my little snowman thrown different places around the house. I was determined to find out what sort of mischievous magic was afoot. And it came in the form of the cat. Frodo somehow knew, looking at it from the ground, that the snowman on top of the dresser had a fluffy hat (seriously, she has a 6th sense for detecting fluffy items). So she had been climbing up there every morning, and throwing it off the dresser to play with it.
Once I found the little thief of my snowman, I moved him to a higher place that Frodo couldn’t reach. She was not happy about it 😉
